Julius Bernstein (1839-1917)

In his "Membrane Theory" of 1902, the German physiologist Julius Bernstein gave the earliest biophysical explanation of propagating action potentials and thereby provided the first truly quantitative theory in electrophysiology.

The BMBF has bestowed the title of "Bernstein" to all Centers/Focus/Partners/Groups/Awards of the Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience, Germany, to honour Bernstein's scientific achievements (see also: http://www.nncn.de/).
